PUT A little piece OF THE PEAK ON YOUR WALL

Artist Statement

Whether Dave uses film or digital to produce art images of the landscape or climbing the same ethos applies; to represent the scene at the time faithfully. Digital manipulation of images is limited to that which is required to produce a good quality print, a satisfactory reproduction of the scanned film, to solve a technical issue, achieve the desired overall look and feel of an image, or otherwise to optimise the file for display.

Heavy content manipulation such as swapping in more dramatic skies, moving around elements in the scene, changing the size of objects, removing bouldering pads or ropes, removing spotters, compositing images, or in any way compromising the documentary value of the images are beyond what Dave considers acceptable and are absent from the art prints you see here. Removal of items of litter in the scene, or a climber’s trainers or bag left conspicuously in shot are about as far as content manipulation will go, but still Dave’s preference is always to solve these problems before they occur.

Print Info

All limited edition numbered prints are accompanied with a printed a certificate of authenticity. Digitally signed in the bottom right border, edition number bottom left.

Open Edition / non-limited edition prints are unnumbered.

Where images are made on traditional film - including all of Dave’s 5x4” large format landscapes, the originals are scanned at high resolution to retain all the detail and fidelity of the original, then printed digitally in the same way as a digital image.

C-type prints are created by exposing light sensitive silver halide paper using an LED or laser light source and put through a conventional chemical developing process. It’s the perfect fusion of modern digital technology and time-honoured true photographic materials.

Print-Only orders are dispatched rolled up in sturdy card shipping tubes. For Print-Only orders, the quoted size is the overall paper size, with the image sitting inside a generous white border within, to look great dropped straight into your own standard sized frame - 24x30cm, 30x40cm, 40x50cm. Or alternatively you might choose to have your print mounted into your favourite larger frame in a window mount by your local picture framers, for maximum wall-filling impact.

For Framed orders, the quoted size is the overall frame size in standard A-sizes - A1, A2, A3 etc. Naturally the size of the actual image is smaller than this, to account for the card window mount. The actual image size is specified in parentheses. Frames are made in Germany from FSC®-certified wood, with rear wall mounting hanging points, and edge-ground float glass, except the largest A1 sized frames, which are fitted with acrylic instead of glass to guard against breakage and reduce weight.

Custom prints, one-offs, and prints in sizes or finishes not listed on this site are possible - contact us if you have specific requirements.

A little tip for frames

If you opt to order a Print-Only print with the intention of displaying in a frame you may need to source your own frame. If you are looking for standard metric sized frames off-the-peg then we would generally recommend sourcing Nielsen frames. These are great quality and widely available both online and in local frame shops. They are not the cheapest but they should last indefinitely, and in the long term they prove to be great value.

Another option is Ikea, who do make some very economical frames which are often very decent for the price point. However, we would offer two points of caution with Ikea frames. Firstly, many have transparent acrylic fronts instead of glass, and in our experience these are more prone of having flaws in the surface of the material and don’t have the same clarity of glass. Also, some of the cheaper larger wooden frames tend to bow or sag outwards at the side over time, so your nice crisp rectangular frame gains curved sides. This can really spoil the appearance of a print, so is something to watch out for.
